Methods of hunting
HOG PATHS
At the dawn of my hunting career I used to hear stories about men who had shot down dozens and even hundreds of wild hogs. I kept devouring all legends in my hope to learn a trick or two so that I could myself meet some of those mythical animals. I used to read hunting books and ask experienced hunters for advice. My inquiries would often be ridiculed and made fun of by the veterans. However, that didn’t put me off and I went on with my questions fully aware of my ignorance. I was a
In order to drop a big animal the bullet has to hit the zone it has been aimed at and following a straight trajectory to strike the organ wished. How should we approach this axiom when hunting?
The topic of the following writing material is to discuss big mammals and monolithic bullets which are the right choice for them. Let us determine first what we mean by vital internal organs.
Sometimes while hunting, things start happening so quickly that it is hard for a man to think a second time and he acts under the pressure of his instincts only. Those instincts which have been handed down to us as a gift from our ancestors and which we have developed are our faithful friends in times of hardship. Not every single individual is endowed with the reflection and intuition giving him the chance of reacting the right way when real danger arises. However, there are people who are born
The fog, wrapping the lovely Eastern Rhodopes was a threat to favourable prospects for making a good bag. The previous sunny day we’d been chasing as we walked and luck had been following suit. The eight strong hunting company had been successful for yet another time. We’d been invited by Nikolay, the manager of the reserve, for the annual stag hunting selection. Eight animals had been already shot on Friday, a male-stag of a decent trophy among them. At the supper, the hunters were busy sharing
It was sometime in the early Middle Ages. The Bulgarian lands. The Western Rhodopes. Near the Kaleto region.
The battle was already over. The Bulgarian army, which had once again been victorious, was persecuting the enemy army. The bodies of those killed in the battle were sprewn all over the battlefield. Pierced and slain men from both armies were lying side by side, each one in an ugly pose chosen by death. The local population were satisfied. It was time for the marauders to have a feast. Ju
Early spring is the season when bears wake up from their winter slumber. This, however, is quite relative because bedding down in lethargy is not a process of a fixed beginning and end. It is quite possible, according to the particular climate and region it inhabits, for that biggest representative of the entire fauna to hibernate and awake several times within a season. There are cases, under more moderate climatic conditions, when Goody Bear doesn’t even go into a state of deep doze. The slowe
My name is Robert Atanassov. I am the publisher of the “Bulgarian Hunter” magazine and I also host the program “Hunting time” which is on TV 7 and Hobby TV. Meanwhile, I am a professional hunter too. It doesn’t mean that I make money by selling furs like trappers used to do. I organize hunting expeditions for people who are not well acquainted with the terrains or the habitats of particular kinds of game. I save time for them, securing a full hunting day, week or a period they’ve chosen.
The stooping figure of the man walking in front of me was as motionless as stone. The fallen autumn leaves and dry twigs treacherously kept punishing our carelessness, slowing down the progress. Anyway, we managed to move forward quite noiselessly. On two occasions we stalked a passing doe. When we had the chance, we used to stop for fear that the rest of the wood inhabitants would warn of our presence by their squeaking.
The path, we were following, was sheltered by a sparse grove of oak trees
Not all hunters can afford money and time for safari but the number of those dreaming of it is really great. I have an urge of paraphrasing a brilliant thought which says:
“A hunter is as great as his dreams.”
When I was a child I used to read some great books dedicated to hunting in Africa and imagined how one day I would do the same on that blessed continent. Today, after having been on twelve safaris there, I can say for sure that Africa is the cradle of hunting. I expect most of the reader
This is the fourth day since I’ve been hunting wild pigs. It seems as if time has taken some other dimensions. As though everything began yesterday but, on the other hand, it looks like I’ve been doing it for a month. Anyway, I wish it could go on for ever and ever.
I gathered a motley crew of bizarre characters, all of them really crazy about hunting. I courageously promised them big bag but the outcome surpassed all expectations. The dozen, or so, enthusiasts, had serious experience. Some of
I didn’t think twice when my friend and fellow-hunter George Boyadjiev invited me for a visit to the “Borovo” game farm. On just one extra condition: if my five year old son Ljubomir would come with me. It had been a long standing promise to take him with me the next time around. I called another friend of mine, Pencho Mladenov, luring him with highland trout which is typical of that region. He didn’t need to be talked into it.
As real fall would have it, we were gifted with a short but lovely Indian summer in the middle of October. The combination of various colors on the tree leaves made the reflection of sun rays look like an invitation for an adventure. The usual thing to say in such cases is: this is the reason why I returned to Bulgaria. Natural beauty compensates for the disgusting sight of poverty and pervert architecture. The fast rhythm gives place to the gorgeous feeling of being united with nature which mak
Uncle Christo from Gramatikovo village had shot quite a number of wild boars in his lifetime. He didn’t even remember how many they had been. Whenever he used to think about what he’d been through, his memory would either distort past events from what they really were or merge them together. His proverbial luck was due to an excellent knowledge of the forest rather than to his good riflescope. In his head, he had drawn up a map of every fallen tree, crook or dry gulch.
It was thousands of years before Christ, somewhere in the Western Rhodopes. An entire age had elapsed since the tectonic movements had died out. The earth mass, folded in result, had molded an extremely various surface. A dense network of rivers and rivulets was engirdling the mountain. The water was favorable for the growing of a variety of vegetation: grass, bushes and tall trees. They were giving shelter to lots of fauna representatives. Herbivorous animals were predominant, as a rule, but at
One of the most pleasant hunting methods is stalk hunting on the run. No matter if the area offers a greater game diversity or is of more humble resources, the thrill of meeting so many different animals in the course of one day only is incomparable to anything.
Three hunters made up their minds to miss the hog battues and to make an individual excursion on the territory of the “Byalka” hunting farm.
Let me introduce myself first. My name’s Robert Atanassov. I’m publishing the “Bulgarian Hunter” magazine and hosting the programs “Time for Hunting” on TV7 and “ Hobby” TV. Meanwhile I am a professional hunter, which doesn’t mean I earn my bread by selling furs the way the trappers used to do. I organize hunting expeditions for people who are ignorant about certain terrains and game habitats. I’m saving their time, ensuring a good hunting day, week or longer periods.
